Grandfather Said by The Ethnographers free essay sample
The Ethnographers- an Indie-Rock band- have written some of the most poetic songs I have ever had the pleasure to listen to, including â⬠Grandfather Saidâ⬠. In this soothing and melodious mix of music and voice, the singers tell the story of life, and the natural cycle of death. The intro of the song starts with a boy talking to a leaf he finds. He asks it what it thinks of dying, and when it doesnââ¬â¢t answer, he picks it up. After realizing whatââ¬â¢s going on, the leaf immediately tells him that what heââ¬â¢s doing is wrong, and that she wants to die in the Forest, not in his song. ââ¬Å"I asked this leaf as she fell from a tree, I said What do you think of dying? and she said nothing back to me So I picked her up, and out of the dirt She said no, no, no, no, this is all wrong she said I belong in the forest, not as a line in one of your songs So I let go, and she fell to the earth I belong in the forestâ⬠In the next few lines, the vocalist tells us about his grandfather, who wonders if his grandson fears death. We will write a custom essay sample on Grandfather Said by The Ethnographers or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Of course, after listening to the wise wisdom of the leaf, the young man says ââ¬Å"no, Itââ¬â¢s as natural as the setting sun.â⬠In a turn of events, the grandfather walks into the setting sun, completing his journey. What a beautiful way to represent passing from one place to another, and a symbolic interpretation of sorrow; like the sun, everyone will die eventually, itââ¬â¢s a mournful cycle of light and dark, Life and Death. ââ¬Å"This old man said do you fear death, son? I said, no, no, no, its just as natural as the setting sun He walked away, into the sunset to die I belong in the forestâ⬠After the Grandfather dies, the boy feels like he has to go through so many tests, and trials, and questions. He gets tired, and lets his words fail him at times. He resents falling asleep, and he doesnââ¬â¢t want to forget the pain he clings so desperately to. Itââ¬â¢s the only emotion he feels, and yet he asks to drift off after so much struggle. ââ¬Å"All these true and false fill in the blanks have been Making my eyes heavy and making my voice faint To spite my tired eyes, Im staying up all night Staying up all night, staying up all night Sing, sing, sing, sing me a lullaby Sing, sing, sing, sing me a lullaby Sing, sing, sing, sing me a lullaby to sleep A lullaby I belong in the forest Sing, sing, sing, sing me a lullaby Sing, sing, sing, sing me a lullaby Sing, sing, sing, sing me a lullaby to sleepâ⬠I feel like we can all gain some solace from this song, and realize that, like the setting sun, and the death of a leaf, we are all a tragically wonderful piece of nature.

THE SCAFFOLDING OF SIN Essays - English-language Films,
THE SCAFFOLDING OF SIN For thousands of years, humans have confronted their sinfulness. Some trust in their religious faith to help with their struggles, some sin more to hide the truth. But in the end, man must stand alone ? as a sinful creature before God. In Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, Dimmesdale has a difficult time finding a place to relieve his sin. The Scarlet Letter's scaffold is a place for the protagonist to find peace with himself. That scaffold holds more importance than just somewhere to condemn prisoners. It is the one place where Dimmesdale felt liberated to say anything he wishes. In Puritan culture, the scaffold is used to humiliate and chastise prisoners, be it witches at the stake, thieves in the stocks, or a murderer hanging from the gallows. In The Scarlet Letter, the scaffold was viewed more as a place of judgement. ?Meagre ... was the sympathy that a transgressor might look for, from such bystanders, at the scaffold.? (p. 63) Indeed, it was used for castigation, but it was also a place of trial: Hester's trial was held at the scaffold. Standing upon the platform opens oneself to God and to the world. ?They stood in the noon of that strange and solemn splendor, as if it were the light that is to reveal all secrets, and the daybreak that shall unite all who belong to one another.? (p. 186) Being on the scaffold puts oneself in a feeling of spiritual nakedness- where you feel exposed to God, but cleans ed. It was the one place where Dimmesdale could find complete reconciliation. Witnessing such an event as reconciliation is quite a fascinating experience. But without knowing what is going on, it can also be quite horrifying. ?Without any effort of his will, or power to restrain himself, he [Dimmesdale] shrieked aloud: an outcry that went pealing through the night, and was beaten back from one house to another, and reverberated from the hills in the background; as if a company of devils, detecting so much misery and terror in it, had made a plaything of the sound, and were bandying it to and fro.? (pp. 178-9) Indeed, the townsfolk felt the latter. ?Drowsy slumberers mistook the cry either for something frightful in a dream, or for the noise of witches.?(p. 179) They did not understand that this was his reconciliation. Both Governor Bellingham and Mistress Hibbens had awoken to the frightful sound and looked from their house in investigation. When they perceived it was the Reverend in another of his midnight vigils rather than a cry for help, they stumbled rig ht back to their sleeping chambers. Along with this inquisitive attention from onlookers, came the looks of disdain, from Chillingworth and others. ?Smiling on her [Hester]; a smile which -- across the wide and bustling square, and through all the talk and laughter, and various thoughts, moods, and interests of the crowd -- conveyed secret and fearful meaning.? (p. 284) Chillingworth might of had other plans, but after hearing what Dimmesdale had to say, Chillingworth thrust himself to his knees and admit defeat. Although he was a sick man, Dimmesdale's struggle was not for life, but for repentance. In fact, his mental anguish of sin is what had caused his illness. Dimmesdale would spend some nights scourging himself, just himself and a whip-like punishment device. He felt it critical to admit his sin to himself and to his community and brethren ?... The Reverend Mr. Dimmesdale turned to the dignified and venerable rulers; to the holy ministers, ... as knowing that some deep life-matter -- which, if full of sin, ... was now to be laid open to them.? (pp. 306) This act of declaring his sin is one step closer to salvation. The scaffold provides a perfect venue to stand before God with everything before oneself. Dimmesdale stood before God and his community and chose to ?sink upon the scaffold. Hester partly raised him, and supported his head against her bosom. Old Roger Chillingworth knelt down beside him, with a blank, dull countenance, out of which the life seemed to have departed." (p. 308) On the scaffold, Dimmesdale openly brought his sin to light and felt restored.

Tips for Breaking into Travel Writing
Tips for Breaking into Travel Writing Being a travel writer has its perks. Travel publications pay well and on time, and once those initial articles are published, free trips start rolling in courtesy of public relations firms. But how do you acquire those first few published articles? Pick Locations Wisely Know your fellow countrymen. United States residents prefer the Caribbean, Hawaii and Mexico, so U.S. travel magazines prefer stories on these regions. While Taipei may intrigue you, these other stories improve your odds of a sale. Party Crashingà Tourism boards, like Atout France or the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, will host events in big cities like Los Angeles or New York to give updates about the latest news in tourism, like new airports or hotel openings. You can use the information given at these events to write an article, even if youve never been to the country hosting the event. Typically, attendees are invited via their publications, but emailing different tourism boards can land you an invite. Follow them on Twitter to find out when theyll be hosting events and shoot them an email request a few weeks in advance. Will Blog for Trips PR firms constantly seek high traffic blogs and may offer bloggers free trips in exchange for a post or two, even if their blog themes are about topics besides travel. You donââ¬â¢t have to pitch editors or have experience to blog, so itââ¬â¢s a good way to break into travel writing Look into Less Popular Publications Everyone knows Travel + Leisure, Conde Nast Traveler and AFAR, but what about magazines catering to travel agents? Magazines like Recommend, Travelweek and Travel Agent. Writing for trade publications is different from writing for consumer publications, but its easy enough to get the hang of the style. Just remember that whoever is reading the article is not going on the trip themselves. Local newspapers also have travel sections. Check with them and see which locations are popular. Make Friends The travel industry thrives on networking. Everyone you meet can offer you an in with an editor, a press trip, an invite to an event. Make friends on every trip you go on, with travel agents, and every publication you write for. When on assignment, always reach out to the tourism board of whatever country youre going to as well as local tour operators. They are more than happy to help you, and once you post an article about a location, you will be on their radar for future trips and opportunities. Pick Up and Move (or Stay Where You Are) Travel magazines love when someone actually lives in the location theyre writing for. If you live in Mexico, Myanmar, or Montevideo, search for publications that have newsletters related to these areas. They love having someone local to attend hotel openings or inaugural flights. Twitter Chats Twitter chats are when groups coordinate a time and hashtag to talk about travel-related topics. Many big publications like Conde Nast Traveler have their own (#TravelerChats). They are the perfect way to network, net followers, and place you on the radar of editors. To find out when theyre happening, follow tour operators, travel agents and travel magazines on Twitter. Two you can start with are Conde Nast Traveler and Travel Weekly.

Project Revisions Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Project Revisions - Essay Example There are no specifics on what type of infrastructure already exist in the park and what are the current conditions of the facilities. The vendor included within his contract that he is only responsible of the new equipment within the park. There are no measures within the plan to clearly identify the equipment the vendor will install. In the beginning it might be simple to differentiate between new or old equipment, but in the future the distinction will not be as clear. Play Place needs to perform a full inventory count of all machinery and equipment preexisting inside Child City before installing any equipment. Play City must stipulate within the contract the exact coordinates where the new equipment will be installed. The contract stipulates that Play City is not responsible if anything happens due to the previous infrastructure. That is a good clause, but the entire city knows that this rehabilitation of this project is based on Play Cityââ¬â¢s involvement. The company should not install anything until they make sure that any equipment installed inside the facilities is up to the companyââ¬â¢s security and quality standards. They must perform a full audit of the facilities before proceeding with the project. The city is currently responsible for performing soil and water inspections of the facilities. The current plan does not specify exactly when these inspections will be realized. Play Place under no circumstance can start the project without proper inspection since a bad soil sample could cause a faulty installation of the playground systems. This factor could delay the project. To mitigate this risk either Play Place or Child City should hire an independent contractor to perform the tests instead of relying on the government of the city. A risk factor within this project is child safety. The Child City Park is designed for children of all ages. The Play Place equipment to be installed is designed

Influence of Colonialism on Political Structures of Africa Nations Essay
Influence of Colonialism on Political Structures of Africa Nations - Essay Example The first Europeans to settle in Africa were Portuguese in 1446. Other Europeans came in Africa first as missionaries, then as colonizers. The British and German idea was for imperialism while the French had no problems with assimilation. The numerous natural resources made Africa attractive to most European nations. Presently, like most parts of the world, Africa has different people, cultures, languages and history partly because of colonialism (Hrituleac 2). Various literatures exist on the influence of colonization to countries. However, most political science and history research analyzes the implication of colonialism in a holistic manner. Ziltener and Kunzler observe that this analysis is not sufficient as different colonial methods were used in different colonies (305). Moreover, the debate of the political and economic influence of colonialism in Africa is still open with some school of thoughts arguing that colonialism has assisted Africa more than exploited it. The assistance in infrastructure, education, urbanization, new political and economic systems is often cited. This paper will attempt to weigh in on the debate by using secondary data to explore the influence of colonialism in Africa by observing three African countries with distinct colonial history.

Piezoelectric Energy Home Analysis
Piezoelectric Energy Home Analysis 1.0 Introduction In Malaysia, each house using electricity at Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB). With the use of electricity, the family in each house to do the activities and generate electrical appliances such as air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines and others. Basically when using a lot of electricity, home users should pay a lot of bills. Some homes also have alternative energy like solar, water and wind, but it has disadvantages because of the use of solar energy they generate during the day camp only. While water and wind requires strategic places to generate electricity. Piezoelectric Energy Home more aimed at people always use a lot energy. Nornally piezoelectric energy home is a useful the future alternative energy. In the United States, China and Japan the consumer use this piezoelectric energy home as an alternative energy. Art Evaluation
Art Evaluation Looking around the hallways, I found many interesting paintings. But, I found that a particular painting was more interesting than the rest. The piece of art that I have chosen to talk about is an artwork that is hanging on the wall in the hallway of JJC. The artwork is painted by a girl named Nicole Marie Wilkin in 2007. She titled her work, ââ¬Å"Endless Miles. â⬠The materials that she chose to use were Oil on Canvas. After looking over the painting, I notice many formal elements. The formal elements that are presented in this work are: color, line, space, texture, and motion. The painting is very well balanced; therefore, my attention isnââ¬â¢t focused on a certain part of the painting. The texture of the painting looks smooth. The multiple uses of contrasting colors are what I believe attracted my eyes to this painting. I feel that this formal element is what is most dominant in the picture. Another formal element that caught my eye was the use of motion. The endless amount of swirls and wavy lines make the painting look as if it is moving. I think that this gives the work a cool effect when looking at it.Using the elements, color and motion together, as Nicole did, was a good idea and works well for drawing attention to her work. The use of these two keep me wondering what the artist was actually thinking when painting this picture. There are also a few principles of composition that I see in this painting. I find that the work has no specific place that is weighted in the painting; therefore, the painting has an all over composition. The painting is asymmetrical because it cannot be split into two parts and mirror each other.I feel that this painting does evoke thoughts and emotions. When I look at this painting I feel a sense of freedom. I feel that this artwork represents freedom because of the numerous amounts of implied lines that lead to other implied lines. I feel as if the painting is leading my eyes on never-ending maze. Th e freedom that I feel is because there is no exact focal point of this painting and my eyes are free to follow whichever implied line they choose. I believe that this idea may lead into why this particular artist may have named her art, ââ¬Å"Endless Miles. I think that the formal elements that make this work so free are the use of motion and line together. I feel that the media and materials used in this art make a strong impact. The use of oil on canvas helps to make the painting look smooth and flowing. I feel that since the artist used oil, she was able to blend her colors well and add shading to her colors. Oil is easily blended since the colors dry very slowly. This is why I think that the use of oil was a good choice for her.
