There is so much more than water at MIT! Thursday, I arrived at CPW two hours later than intended. My flight through OHare airport was delayed, and it took over fourteen hours to get to Boston from my hometown. I was soaked from the weather, completely unable to find Terminal E, and jet lagged. By that night, I was bouncing with glee and sugar in the elevator to the fifth floor. The chocolate and peanut butter ice cream with eleven toppings I ate at the dorm probably played a part in that total happiness. So did the welcome event and festival- I was entertained, I was deeply impressed, and I was incredibly relieved that I wouldnt have to give up Taekwondo or good chocolate at MIT. It was my very first time on campus, so I was struck by the sheer variety of activities that students do. All it takes to make a group is passion. Besides the two soda can holders, I was given a mug at the Womens Dessert Reception, a t-shirt at the Beaver and the Geek show, one I tie-dyed myself, a pair of two way radios at the Dorm Life raffle, and a red clip ring. And thats not even counting whatever I bought with my $20.11 of Tech cash and my mass of brochures, folders, and booklets. Haha!! Plunder!! Its great that MIT actually cares about its prefrosh and wants them to see what the place is really like. As if I still need convincing that its the best. Saturday night, I went to Next Acts Beauty and the Beast instead of Battle of the Bands. It was the greatest part of CPW for me! Since it was the hacked version, every scene was slightly changed to keep the Disney feel but make it 1000x more hilarious. It represented MIT better than any other event I went to. In fact, Ill go so far as to say that it was MIT, condensed into a play and stuffed into the biggest, most colorful costumes Ive ever seen. And now for some random and wonderful CPW moments: Tim the beaver dancing to Total Eclipse of the Heart. But in the end, man must stand alone ? as a sinful creature before God. In Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, Dimmesdale has a difficult time finding a place to relieve his sin. The Scarlet Letter's scaffold is a place for the protagonist to find peace with himself. That scaffold holds more importance than just somewhere to condemn prisoners. It is the one place where Dimmesdale felt liberated to say anything he wishes. In Puritan culture, the scaffold is used to humiliate and chastise prisoners, be it witches at the stake, thieves in the stocks, or a murderer hanging from the gallows. In The Scarlet Letter, the scaffold was viewed more as a place of judgement. ?Meagre ... was the sympathy that a transgressor might look for, from such bystanders, at the scaffold.? (p. 63) Indeed, it was used for castigation, but it was also a place of trial: Hester's trial was held at the scaffold. Art Evaluation

Art Evaluation Looking around the hallways, I found many interesting paintings. But, I found that a particular painting was more interesting than the rest. The piece of art that I have chosen to talk about is an artwork that is hanging on the wall in the hallway of JJC. The artwork is painted by a girl named Nicole Marie Wilkin in 2007. She titled her work, â€Å"Endless Miles. † The materials that she chose to use were Oil on Canvas. After looking over the painting, I notice many formal elements. The formal elements that are presented in this work are: color, line, space, texture, and motion.The painting is very well balanced; therefore, my attention isn’t focused on a certain part of the painting. The texture of the painting looks smooth. The multiple uses of contrasting colors are what I believe attracted my eyes to this painting. I feel that this formal element is what is most dominant in the picture. Another formal element that caught my eye was the use of motion. The endless amount of swirls and wavy lines make the painting look as if it is moving. I think that this gives the work a cool effect when looking at it.Using the elements, color and motion together, as Nicole did, was a good idea and works well for drawing attention to her work. The use of these two keep me wondering what the artist was actually thinking when painting this picture. There are also a few principles of composition that I see in this painting. I find that the work has no specific place that is weighted in the painting; therefore, the painting has an all over composition. The painting is asymmetrical because it cannot be split into two parts and mirror each other.I feel that this painting does evoke thoughts and emotions. When I look at this painting I feel a sense of freedom. I feel that this artwork represents freedom because of the numerous amounts of implied lines that lead to other implied lines. I feel as if the painting is leading my eyes on never-ending maze. Th e freedom that I feel is because there is no exact focal point of this painting and my eyes are free to follow whichever implied line they choose. I believe that this idea may lead into why this particular artist may have named her art, â€Å"Endless Miles. I think that the formal elements that make this work so free are the use of motion and line together. I feel that the media and materials used in this art make a strong impact. The use of oil on canvas helps to make the painting look smooth and flowing. I feel that since the artist used oil, she was able to blend her colors well and add shading to her colors. Oil is easily blended since the colors dry very slowly. This is why I think that the use of oil was a good choice for her.

The Pit and the Pendulum: Movie vs. Book

The Pit and the Pendulum is a book written by Edgar Allen Poe in 1842. Years later, in 1961, a movie was made. Directed by Roger Corman, the film is a lot different than the movie, though it does have a few similarities. One of the few similarities is the pendulum sequence. When Francis is strapped down to the â€Å"bed,† the pendulum comes inches closer and closer, slowly, as in the book. Right as it’s about to kill him, he’s saved. Another similarity, though minor, is the involvement of a pit.A major difference is the involvement of a plot. In the book, there’s almost no plot at all, except that the character is a military man in France. In the movie, the plot is long, explained well, and a little more interesting than the book. The pit and pendulum themselves have very little involvement in the movie, while in the book, they’re almost always involved and the pit is introduced almost right away. Also, in the movie, there are way more characters. I think Roger Corman did a pretty mediocre job making a movie out of the book.I understand that the movie wasn’t really meant to be based off of the book entirely, but they could have involved the pit and the pendulum a little more throughout the movie. Although the plot was good and had plenty of shock, I did like the plot of the book a little more. If I wrote the script, I would have added a lot more to the plot of the book and kept it. It seems like Corman just made the movie with the title, and only had the pit and the pendulum stay. In short, Corman could have done better.
